What a non contrast CT shows
Questions answered without a drop of contrast
Contrast exists to separate structures with similar density, mainly vessels, organs and inflamed tissue. Plenty of clinical questions do not depend on that distinction at all and adding dye would introduce cost and risk without improving the answer.
Kidney stones, acute bleeding in the head, sinus disease and bone injury all show up plainly on a plain scan, which is why those studies are deliberately ordered without contrast.

What the scan itself is like
You lie on a table that slides through a short open ring. Unlike MRI there is no tunnel, no loud knocking and no confinement and most patients with claustrophobia manage a CT without difficulty at all.
The scan itself often takes under a minute. You will be asked to hold your breath briefly for chest and abdominal studies and to stay still throughout, but the whole process is over remarkably quickly.
Keeping the radiation dose low
CT does use ionizing radiation and we treat that seriously. Protocols are set to the lowest dose that still answers the question, adjusted for body size and reduced further for younger patients. Tell us about recent imaging elsewhere so studies are not repeated needlessly.

How to prepare for a CT without contrast
This is among the simplest studies we perform. Almost nothing is asked of you beyond arriving with your paperwork.
Eat and drink as you normally would
No fasting applies when contrast is not involved. Take your regular medications on schedule and have breakfast or lunch as you usually would before coming in.
Remove metal from the scan area
Zippers, belt buckles, jewelry and underwire create bright streaks across the images. Wear simple clothing without fasteners near the region being scanned and leave jewelry at home.
Tell us if pregnancy is possible
Radiation and early pregnancy warrant a conversation before scanning. Alternatives such as ultrasound or MRI can often answer the same question, so raise it at check in rather than afterward.
Bring prior imaging on disc
Comparison studies matter, particularly for nodule follow up where growth over time is the entire question. Request discs from any outside facility ahead of your appointment date.
