What a Digital X-ray shows
Immediate images with a fraction of the old exposure
A short pulse of radiation passes through the body toward an electronic detector and dense structures such as bone absorb more of it than air or soft tissue. The difference in what reaches the detector forms the image.
Digital detectors replaced film entirely, which cut the dose needed, removed processing chemicals and put images on the radiologist’s screen within seconds rather than after a trip to a darkroom.

You stand, sit or lie depending on which region is being imaged and the technologist positions the body part against or in front of the detector. Each exposure lasts a fraction of a second.
Several views are almost always taken, since a fracture invisible from the front frequently becomes obvious from the side. The whole appointment usually finishes within ten minutes of entering the room.
Why the dose is so much lower now
Digital detectors are far more sensitive than film, so less radiation is needed to produce a usable image. A single chest film delivers roughly what you absorb from the environment across a few ordinary days.

Preparing for a digital X-ray
Radiography asks almost nothing of you. Arrive with your order during business hours and we handle the rest.
Bring your physician order
No appointment is needed but a referral is. It tells the technologist which region to image and how many views your radiologist will need to answer the clinical question.
Dress with the imaging area in mind
Avoid zippers, snaps, underwire and heavy embellishment near the body part being filmed. Metal blocks the beam and casts shadows that can hide genuine findings underneath.
Mention pregnancy before we begin
If pregnancy is possible, say so at check in. Shielding, a modified approach or an entirely different study can be arranged before any exposure takes place.
Bring prior films if you have them
Comparison images help considerably, particularly for healing fractures and chronic joint changes. Discs from another facility should be requested a few days ahead of your visit.
